Presenting a success story: The new turbine is humming

New gas turbine at the North Buda Heating Power Plant – a step towards a more flexible and sustainable energy supply

In May 2025, the new gas turbine-generator unit at the North Buda Heating Power Plant was ceremoniously inaugurated. This unit is not only the cornerstone of reliable district heating services but also a significant milestone in modern electricity generation.

The failure of the previous turbine caused a significant loss of capacity, prompting MVM Balance Zrt. to secure a replacement through an open public procurement procedure. The selected equipment, a Solar Titan 250 gas turbine, is one of the most modern solutions on the market:

  • 22.6 MW of electrical power

  • High efficiency

  • Long-term reliability

The team at Kaiser & Pilisi played a key role in managing the public procurement procedure:

  • Between February and May 2024, over 16 days of negotiations conducted in both Hungarian and English, they provided comprehensive public procurement and legal support to the client. This support extended not only to dealings with the contracting authority, MVM Balance Zrt., but also to the contract negotiations with the turbine supplier.

  • As a result, a valid and final offer was reached in June 2024, and following the successful procedure, the execution of the contract is proceeding successfully.

The contractor for the project was VABEKO Engineering Kft., which performed excellent work from the design phase through to commissioning. However, the project’s scope does not end with the launch; the contract also covers the new turbine’s 20-year operational period and the execution of its major factory overhauls.

The new turbine is more than just a technological upgrade: it is an investment of strategic importance that enhances the power plant’s flexibility and guarantees a secure district heating supply for nearly 20,000 homes in Óbuda, especially during peak winter periods.

Congratulations to all contributing partners on the successful collaboration!
